Week 3

MAKE THE FROG JUMP

Today in the workshop we were given a pair of scissors, a glue stick, a piece of cardboard, a picture of a frog and an elastic band. With these materials (seen in the picture below) we were asked to make the frog jump. This process involved made us think about all of the different ways this task could have been completed. After a group discussion, we decided to make the frog jump by:

  • Firstly, pasting the frog to the little piece of cardboard.

  • Secondly, we took the elastic band and wrapped it around our thumb and pointing finger.

  • Thirdly, we took the piece of cardboard and placed it infront of the elastic band which was wrapped around our fingers (making a slingshot).

  • We pulled the cardboard back into the elastic and then let go. This resulted in the cardboard flicking across the room.
Thus the frog jumped!!

The second part of the class involved us using a website called QUIA. This website allows individuals to create a number of resources to use in their classrooms. On this website individuals can create quizzes and games for their students to use or their students can each create a quizz or game for their class members to share. It is a great way to get the children thinking in a different way - developing the quiz questions instead of always solving them. Even the games that children can make on this site prompt them to think about different topics, words and use skills such as maths and english to help them to make their game a challenge for their peers.

Below is a game of animal hangman that was created during our workshop. The game is based on the normal concept of hangman but uses balloons that pop each time an answer is wrong and only provides the name of animals for the children to guess.

Following on is a quiz that was created during the workshop. The quiz is based arouns maths and the concept of time. It gives the co-ordinates of the hands on a clock and asks the students to guess the time.
This is a fun way to enhance the childrens mathematical skills in a fun way.

What is the time quiz?
